Who Started Blankets for Metro Moncton Homeless - BMMH?
In fall of 2007 Monique Gough had an idea to ask some friends to donate blankets for the homeless. When she put it on Facebook, the small group of friends grew to a few hundred supporting her cause. The blanket drive was a success and far exceeded her expectations. When Monique had to return to work following her maternity leave, she felt she needed to pass on the roll of head organizer for 2008.
Monique Gough, won The Advance Savings Credit Union (ASCU)Community Champion Award for her initiative in establishing the Blankets for Metro Moncton blanket drive in 2007.
Congratulations Monique!

Who Organized the 2008 Blankets for Moncton Campaign?
In the Spring of 2008, Monique Gough sent a notice to the members of BMMH to find an organizer to pass on the project for the second year since she had to step down and return to work following her maternity leave.
Nadine Lipton accepted the challenge and worked on planning and strategy ideas during the summer. In the fall, Nadine visited all of the organizations in the Moncton area to do face-to-face interviews and compile a list of items that would be needed for their clients in the coming months. She then visited various sponsors and local businesses to find support for the 2008 blanket drive including the Lighthouse Storage facility for temporary storage for the items and all of the drop off spots in the Moncton, Dieppe, and Riverview locations.
At the end of September, she launched the new website www.BlanketsForMoncton.com and started the collection through Facebook and word-of-mouth until late November.
On November 20th, the press campaign was launched in conjunction with the Greater Moncton Homelessness Steering Committee Breakfast and the Affordable Housing day and there was coverage on all local television networks, all local newspapers, and all local radio stations throughout the next month leading up until Christmas.
The collection was officially closed at the end of the year but sorting and distribution continued until February 28th when the last storage bin was closed for the season.
More than 6000 bags of blankets and clothing was collected, hand sorted, and distributed as well as more than 100 pieces of furniture. More than 100 volunteers assisted with all parts of the collection, sorting, and distributing clocking more than 500 volunteer hours.
